     H.L. Mencken was certainly a character! His reservations about democracy were the sort of fears that motivated our Founding Fathers to set up a republic...instead of a pure democracy.
     
     Our Founding Fathers were afraid that--left unchecked--the unwashed masses would run amok and destroy all that the privileged had devised. We have a bi-cameral legislature. They designed a House of Representives (for the common folk) and a Senate (for the privileged). That, in theory, is what our Founding Fathers envisioned.
     
     Critics of a pure democracy cited the examples of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome--where hucksters could sway the common folk with lies and crafty speeches. The common folk, the demos, could be lead by the nose by a clever demagogue.
     
     Thank God we don't have any demagogues anymore!
